Our Production of Olivia by Malcolm Sircom, was a joint collaboration between the junior and senior Stagekids groups.
Olvia's story starts in Manchester when she is sent to the dreaded Mrs Murdstone's orphanage. Olivia explains she doesn't know anything about her family and the only clue to her past is a locket she has always had. After an extremely short stay there, Olivia decides she's not prepared to put up with eating Slop for every meal and manages to escape - with help (in a fashion) from the kindly Dicken. She makes her way to Covent Garden, London where she meets Fagin and Dodger who reminisce about Good Times past and nearly trick Olivia into a life of crime by making George Bernard Shaw think she has stolen money from him. Fortunately flower seller Eliza Doolittle, a lady who longs to talk posh, comes to her rescue and takes her under her wing. Finding all they have got from GB Shaw is a couple of theatre tickets, Dodger and Fagin decide to try a night out at the Opera instead of their usual devious dealings, and Dodger discovers a love for the stage he never knew he had.
With Eliza's help Olivia finds herself at Mrs Dilber's School for Girls - a much nicer place than Mrs Murdstone's and settles in well. The school is a charitable place and Olivia, who loves singing, fits straight in and leads the girls on a successful charity collection - even getting the misery Ebeneezer Scrooge to cough a coin or two. Dodger and Fagin turn up again. They've now gone straight and are enjoying life as successful stars of the stage. They're looking for someone to play the part of a young girl in their latest production and Olivia fits the bill perfectly. Meanwhile, Eliza's friend Annie - a lady who talks posh and who lost her memory ten years ago - suffers a bump to her head that starts bringing back one or two memories. Eliza gets Sherlock Holmes (who owes her a favour) on to the case, and it turns out that Olivia and Annie are...well....that would spoil the ending wouldn't it?
