Jump aboard the bus, buckle your seatbelt and join us on "Our Day Out". This fun musical comedy by Willy Russell, the man behind "Blood Brothers", Educating Rita" and "Shirley Valentine", was chosen by the older group for their latest project.
We follow Mrs Kay's Progress Class ("where you go when you're backward, like") as for one day only they leave behind the muck and grime of Liverpool and take a trip to Conway in Wales. They visit the zoo (borin'), the castle (borin'), the beach (borin') and the fairground (bleedin' borin').
Mrs Kay, appreciating the kids come from largely deprived and dysfunctional backgrounds, wants the group to have a fun day out, but the authoritarian Mr Briggs feels the trip should be educational and does his best to take over. Assisting teachers Colin and Susan come along to help and find themselves dealing with unwanted amorous attention from a couple of pupils, and hope a bit of gentle matchmaking might solve this problem.
Will they return in one piece?!
This play is perfect for a teenage group and the kids enjoyed being allowed to do things we don't normally like such as chewing gum and answering back (only within the confines of the script of course!) There are some lovely tunes, the best of which are linked below in midi format (listen through a GM midi device for best quality). Scripts, musical scores and performing licences may be obtained from Samuel French.
